Kathy Halstead Barnes
July 9, 1957 - August 11, 2000
Kathy
Halstead Barnes is a professional artist and educator,
and parent to Lauren and Connor Barnes, both Bristol students
since kindergarten. Born July 9, 1957 in San Luis Obispo, California,
Mrs. Barnes was raised in many states since her father was often
transferred as an aeronautical engineer. She married William
Samuel Barnes on April 21, 1979, in Ballard, California.
After graduating with a bachelor's degree from the University
of California at Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, California, she
pursued and attained a master's degree at Northern Arizona University
in Flagstaff, Arizona. Mrs. Barnes has taught art classes
at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California; California
Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California;
Colorado College; and in District 11's Home School Support Program
in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
In November of 1998,
Steve Ferguson, principal of Bristol School, called for a committee
to be formed to create a mural on a long wall in the school
building. Along with Kathy O'Neil, Bristol's art teacher
at the time, and Diana Francese, parent to Sarah,
Eric and Renee, all Bristol students; Mrs. Barnes composed and
sketched out timelinesof Colorado, Colorado Springs and Bristol
School in particular, incorporating noteworthy persons, events
and themes potentially interesting to students. During
the last week of school in June, 1999, each student present
and many staff members placed their handprints in gold paint,
making imprints around the border of the mural. The following
week, painting of the actual mural began with a portrait of
the Rev. Richard C. Bristol, for whom the school was named.
Mrs. Barnes has painted over a hundred vignettes within the
mural. Portraits are Mrs. Barnes' favorite subjects.
Her portraits and paintings are in collections around the United
States and England.
Bristol
thanks Kathy Halstead Barnes for her contribution of hours,
effort and talent to the Bristol Wall.
