SPECIAL EDUCATION/PROGRAMS FOR HANDICAPPED/DISABLED/
EXCEPTIONAL STUDENTS
(Tutoring)

(Regulation) Policy

Special education tutoring services are provided only when the direct special education services in the school are not sufficient to meet the student's needs.

Whenever there is a request for special education tutoring, the request must go to the staffing committee. If the committee finds the student's needs sufficient for additional services, the application will be submitted to the director of student support services for final approval.

A tutor will be assigned by the director of special education. The student's individual education plan (IEP) will reflect the tutor's hours, goals and objectives. Progress must be documented on the IEP as well as in a progress report submitted to the student support services office at the end of the tutoring.

The special education tutor must be included in all special education review staffings as a member of the staffing committee and must consult with the parents and classroom teachers as necessary.

When a special education student is suspended for disciplinary reasons, any requests for interim tutoring must be initiated by the staffing committee. The application must be submitted to the director of student support services for approval.

For homebound students, a responsible adult in addition to the tutor must remain in the home during the entire tutoring session.
