Support Services
Carol Parks,
Literacy Resource
Teacher
All students can learn, but not all can
learn in the same way. Many students come to us discouraged with
“school” because of past failures. Bijou sets out to determine and
address that which has hindered success to this point:
- All
new students are tested within their first two weeks with the Scholastic
Reading Inventory (SRI) to determine reading level.
- CSAP
scores are assessed.
- If a
literacy deficit is determined, an intervention program will be
chosen based on the student’s need.
- If a
student is in the 9th or 10th Grade and scored
less than proficient in reading on the most recent CSAP, an
Individual Literacy Plan (ILP) will be written. An ILP recommends
strategies and support to be used by the content area teachers as
well as possible enrollment in a reading program.

Literacy intervention programs in place at
Bijou include the following:
-
Read 180 (most frequently used)
is a computer based program covering all five component of
reading—phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and
comprehension.
-
Read Naturally is also a
computer based program--focusing on fluency to build
comprehension.
-
Writing tutoring is offered for
those determined to need extra support in writing.
Every
effort is made to identify literacy needs and support the students in
developing reading and writing skills necessary to function with success
in the 21st Century.
If you are
concerned about your child and question the possibility of a literacy
