Assessment
Assessment and data interpretation are
central to the Response to Intervention process. Benchmarking
is the process of assessing all students three times per school
year in reading, math and writing. Benchmarking is the first
step in identifying students who are not benefiting from regular
classroom instruction.
Progress monitoring is performed multiple
times per year to ensure that RtI students are continuing to
progress adequately. If the progress monitoring data shows that
a student is not progressing additional assessments may occur
more frequently to provide specific, up-to-date information.
The RtI assessment process includes the
following:
-
The teacher administers short, skills-based tests (2-3 minutes each) to get baseline data on
how well a student performs these skills.
-
If a student learns at a slower rate or at a lower level
than others in the classroom, the tests help the teacher
pinpoint problems.
-
The teacher changes the way she teaches or the materials
he uses so the student better understands the lessons.
-
The teachers encourages the student to take
responsibility for trying hard, daily attendance, and turning in
homework.
-
The teachers continues to monitor progress using short
tests and graphing the results.
