New members: Your membership doesn't start until the 2010-2011 school year. This means you don't owe dues, need to log community service, or attend NHS meetings until next school year.
Our mission is to promote academic excellence, to encourage service to others, and to promote leadership.
Meetings: Our general assembly meetings are mostly held the first Tuesday of every month in the Lecture Hall from 3:05 to 3:30 p.m. Attendance at the meetings is a requirement for membership. If you cannot attend a meeting for school-related reasons (e.g. - a soccer game, not practice), see Mr. Chamberlin in room 222 prior to the meeting. Failure to inform Mr. Chamberlin of your absence prior to the meeting will result in an absence for that meeting.
Officers meet the Tuesday prior to the general assembly meeting during lunch in Mr. Chamberlin's office, room 229.
Upcoming Meeting Schedule:
May 4, 2010
Lookup your NHS membership status. Enter your Last Name and Student ID to access your record. You can make changes to your phone number and email address. Active member status requiries 15 hours of community service hours both semesters and a 75% attendance rating for the school year.
If your name isn't listed or the information is wrong, please contact a NHS Officer or Mr. Chamberlin.
Bylaws are the governing rules and regulations of the Palmer NHS Chapter and its members. Please read them.
Each semester members are expected to contribute 15 hours of their time to community service, including 10 hours of service in at least one of the following Palmer Organizations: NHS-Sponored Activities, Peace Jam, Invisible Children, French Club (Haiti Goat Project), E.C.O., Link Crew, Paint the Schools, Operation Shoes, and Palmer RED.
NHS - Sponsor is Michael Chamberlin (328-5079). NHS service hours include any volunteer activity sponsored by NHS. Examples include volunteering and/or donating at Palmer's blood drives, and volunteering during Palmer's beautification days.
Peace Jam - Sponsor is Sonia Urban (328-5134). PeaceJam partners youth with Nobel Peace Laureates in completing the Global Call to Action (service projects). We meet Tuesdays at lunch in room 249 and some Saturdays as well.
Invisible Children - Sponsor is Chris Duval (328-5118). Meeting time for Invisible Children is Thursday afternoons on room 04. Website:http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php
E.C.O. Club - Sponsor is Erica Rewey (328-5081). ECO: Earth is a Community of One Meets Thursdays at lunch in room 260 or courtyard. Our focus is on environmental/people issues - "Making an impact by reducing our impact."
French Club - Sponsors are Genevieve Poucel and Bonnie Poucel (328-5156 and 328-5154, respectively). The primary focus for NHS members is the Haiti Goat Project which provides goats and therefore a sustainably lifestyle to poor Haitian families. French club meets Tuesdays after school, room 232.Palmer RED - Sponsors are Annette Demel and Cynthia Page (328-5024 and 328-5151, respectively). This clubs informs and raises awareness about HIV & AIDS in the Palmer community. The club meets every Thursday during lunch in room 248.
Link Crew - Sponsor is Lossie Ortiz (328-5066). This program addresses the many needs of incoming students to Palmer High School by providing leadership and relationship to new Palmer students. Link Crew members are nominated by faculty.
Paint the Schools - Sponsor is Erica Rewey (328-5081). This program is a community service club focused on painting murals in schools who need more color. The organization opens doors for students to brighten their community and improve District 11 facilities with art and color. The club meets as needed. Please contact the sponsor or club representatives for more information.
Operation Shoes - Sponsor is David Kennington (328-5056). This club collects shoes and sends them to Afghanistan to help clothe the impoverished children. Winter clothes and school supplies are also collected and sent overseas. The club meets during lunch on Mondays in room 117.
Contributing to society and giving back to the community creates the character that is a NHS member. Extra Volunteer hours one semester does not carry over to the next semester.
Service Hours take many forms: soup kitchens, blood drives, Forest Service trail maintenance, neighborhood beautification, aiding the elderly or disabled, and tutoring are a few possible opportunities. The choice is yours - find something where you can contribute to the good of society by making the world a better place than it was before you volunteered. Here are few volunteer opportunities, but by no means is it conclusive.
Important: use this form to record and verify your hours. Once all of your Spring semester hours are logged, turn in your completed form to Mr. Chamberlin in room 222 by May 18, 2010 (May 7, 2010 for Seniors).
*Do you have a volunteer community service opportunity for NHS students? Please contact Michael Chamberlin or complete the information form.
**New D11 district rules now require a completed and updated Volunteer Registration Form for all people who volunteer in a D11 capacity. This includes D11 students. If you volunteer at Palmer (e.g. - Blood Drive), judge at a middle school science fair, or partake in any volunteer opportunity on D11 grounds, you must complete the form. However, if your volunteer services are completely off D11 grounds and separate from D11 sponsored activities, then the form does not need completing. If you are unsure, please complete the form.
You can download and complete the form from the web link above or get a copy from Mrs. Wehling in the principal's office or Mrs. Geschke in the main office. Upon completion, turn in the form to Mrs. Wehling or Mrs. Geschke with ID verification (Driver's License, Student ID).
NHS Blood Drive Our spring drive was an overwhelming success. The two-day drive brought in 120 pints of blood! This was teh biggest high school blood drive in Colorado Springs. Thank you to everyone who donated.
