ART COURSES AT PALMER
There is considerable research on the academic value of students receiving instruction in the Visual Arts. Students will learn the elements of art and principles of design. They will learn about art in relation to history, culture, and the community. They will also recognize and use the visual arts as a form of communication, and will critique works of art through analysis, assessment, and evaluation.
Notice: All students who have completed MYP Art have met the Intro. to Visual Arts Requirement.
Intro. to Visual Arts Materials fee: $10.00

In order to break the rules you need to know what they are. Learn the rules of art, the elements and principles, in order to unlock the mysteries of art. Then discover what works. Armed with this information, take charge of the media to express yourself in two and three-dimensional works of art. This class is a gives you a chance to explore a variety of media: drawing, computer art, sculpture, ceramics, painting, photo and/or printmaking.

Love to draw? Wish you could draw? Build your drawing skills by looking at and drawing real objects and spaces. Learn to use various drawing tools, surfaces, and techniques. Use these skills to share you ideas with other by drawing from your imagination. Classroom activities will concentrate upon contour, gesture, mass and perspective drawings.

Prerequisite: Drawing
Expand your drawing skills and use a wider range of media: pen and ink, colored pencil, pastels, charcoal, conté, crayon, graphite and markers. Explore your creativity by investigating styles of master and contemporary artists. This course also allows you to experiment with media and styles. Try your hand at abstraction, surrealism and expressionism.

Make your own mark on the world! Draw from influences and resources from around the globe. Use your mastery of drawing techniques and media while exploring forms from direct observation. Learn to express what you want to say in your art and explore a variety of styles and artists. What influences you? How do you express that? Develop your own personal aesthetic.

Who influences your style? Explore the line that connects historical influences and your own work. Independent investigation will help you select a theme or area of concentration that will help convey your personal aesthetic. A sketchbook and portfolio will record your improvement and evolution of ideas. Present and defend a body of work that supports your growth and development as an artist.

Studio Art AP is designed for senior students who combine exceptional ability with a high degree of interest in the practice of art. Students will be expected to submit a portfolio of work to examiners in May in an attempt to qualify for credit and advanced placement in American colleges. (Although students need not be enrolled in an AP course to submit a portfolio, it is highly recommended.) Work done in the course will be expected to reflect three Pre-requisite areas of concern: breadth, concentration, and quality.

Want to expand your art skills using the computer? Computers aren’t just for typing reports. Earn your computer credit in an art class! Students will gain a basic understanding of computer produced art and graphic images. This may include, but is not limited to, fine are graphics, graphic design, typography, animation, web design, and creating art for advertising. Included in the course will be an overview of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the standard for a computer graphic career. Appreciation of computer-generated art will be incorporated into the course.

Now morph the skills you learned in the beginning computer art course by digging deeper into graphics technology. Some of the deeper skills to be gained in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and other software programs are: mesh layers, blending, channels, masking and advance layering. Earn your computer or art credit by drawing, painting, or collaging on the computer.

Discover the world of commercial art. Learn how to communicate visually the ideas that sell products. This course is designed to introduce students to the various tools and techniques that are basic to the major areas of commercial art. These will include, but are not limited to, drawing and painting techniques, evolution of ideas, layout and package design, lettering and graphics. This course also includes a brief introduction to the use of computers. A general career orientation to commercial art fields, such as illustration and advertising, will be explored.

Expand your skills as a designer by taking your pencil sketches and develop them further on the computer. You will continue to work with commercial skills and techniques by using Adobe software programs. Learn illustrative drawing techniques using the Wacom tablet while working on designs for packaging and products. Guest speakers and information on careers in the arts will be presented.

Discover a world of color. Explore painting by mixing your own hues and working with primarily wet media. Learn about traditional and experimental painting techniques, tools, and surfaces. Materials used may include tempera, watercolor, acrylic, and oil. Composition, color theory, and developmental skills will be emphasized. Uncover the secrets of the masters through the study of painting throughout art history.

Is painting only done on paper? If you answered "No" then this is the class for you! Learn to construct your own surface by making your own stretched canvas. Also use alternative methods for surface preparations such as painting on boards, paper and other non-traditional surfaces. historical and cultural aspects will be explored.

Occupy real space! Construct three-dimensional forms in clay, wood, plaster, paper, wire, metal, and mixed media. Learn the four processes of casting, carving, modeling and assemblage. Sculpture is a tactile and physical experience that allows you to work with a variety of tools.

Now is the chance to create larger scale three-dimensional forms! study the figure and hone your skills in both representational and abstract renderings. Investigate different types of sculpture, relief as well as in-the-round. Finished work may include mosaics, busts, "life size" armatures and cast pieces.

Take up physical space through an exploration of three-dimensional form. Continue to explore the four processes learned previously to communicate your vision! An in depth study of how various cultures create works using assemblage, mold-making, working with wax, stone carving and casting with paper and/or clay will be addressed. How will your sculptures and those of others impact our surroundings? This is a great opportunity to create and study public works of art.

Here’s a chance to get your hands dirty. Experience the thrill of clay by using hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Create original three-dimensional forms. Learn the difference between functional and non-functional ceramics. An emphasis will be placed on the elements and principles of design to plan and create your pieces.

Spinning round and round? Or are you feeling more grounded? Either way this is the class for you! Spend your time on the potter's wheel, hand building and combining the two. Reduction, low and high firing techniques will be covered. Create vessels, mugs, and plates on the wheel. Sculptural, non-functional, pieces will also be designed.

Dig into your passion for the organic qualities of clay. Reinforce your love of form and investigate ceramics as a career. What does a production potter do? How do you load and fire a kiln? Techniques in this class will cover alternative firing methods, various surface embellishments, mold making and distinctive finishing processes. Understand the influence of culture on ceramic art and measure its impact on your own work.

Ceramics 4 is an advanced level course designed to offer students an in-depth experience in working with clay. This course will be developed on a contractual basis between instructor and student, and classroom experiences will culminate in a one-person show. Art history, criticism, and aesthetics will be incorporated into the course through instructional resources and art production.

Digital Photography, LEVEL 1 ART

Does your new digital camera scare you? Conquer your fears and take control of your images! Learn how digital cameras operate. This course will cover camera operations, fundamentals of lighting, proper composition, making exposures and using Adobe Photoshop. Begin with black and white images and work your way into color images. Students will explore the potentials of computers and software in developing their imagery and ideas.

Now that you are shooting like a pro, learn how to create images that a pro would envy. Continue to learn how the digital SLR camera operates using a variety of lenses. Students will focus on indoors and outdoors photography using macro, telephoto, and other lenses. The photo is just the beginning. Use Photoshop to alter your existing images. Bring your creative side to this class, and explore your imagination through digital images.

Enter the world of the commercial photographer. Gain mastery over your digital SLR and begin building your photography portfolio. Concentrate on the commercial aspects that the working photographer faces daily which include portraiture, landscapes, and photojournalism to name a few. Focus on the genre you’re interested in and demonstrate your skills through the portfolio you produce. Introduction to marketing your work will be covered.

Utilize your skills with the digital camera to express your artistic vision. Be prepared to present your work, defend its meaning and explain its influences.

Prerequisite: None. This course is an introductory course to IB Art and Design, a group six offering in the IB Diploma Program.
IBMYP Art & Design provides students with opportunities to develop the ability to express themselves and their ideas about the world they live in, working both independently and as cooperative members of a group. Visual arts involve students in a unique combination of psycho-motor skills, factual knowledge and affective understanding which promotes issues; provide insights, opinions, solutions and resolutions; and reflect on, appreciate and evaluate artwork. A developmental workbook will be required which reflects their development, investigations, and shows a record of their creative process.
IB ART DESIGN 5, 6 SL Materials fee: $20.00

The aims of the program in Art/Design are to: provide students with the opportunities to develop the aesthetic, imaginative and creative faculties; stimulate and train visual awareness, perception and criticism of the arts of various cultures; enable students to discover, develop and enjoy means of creative visual expression in the studio and elsewhere, which are suited to their temperament and capabilities; encourage the pursuit of quality, through training, individual experiment and persistent endeavor; exemplify and encourage a lively, enquiring and informed attitude towards art and design in all its forms, both in history and today. At the Subsidiary Level the candidate will choose either Studio (Practical) Work or Research Workbook.
IB ART DESIGN 5, 6, 7, 8 HL Materials fee: $20.00
