Attention 2008 IB MYP 9th Grade Parents and Students:
This year’s IB Middle Years Program Freshmen Parent and Student Support Night is scheduled for October 2 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm. As in years past, our evening together will begin with a whole group welcome in Palmer’s Lecture Hall, providing general information about what is happening in 9th grade IB. Parents and students will then have the opportunity to attend several interactive discussion groups designed to better navigate themselves during this important freshmen year.
The following break out groups will provide people with vital information about the IB program at Palmer and also suggest ways that parents/students can remain actively and effectively involved in high school life and student achievement:
Developing Meaningful Community Service Experiences:
This session details the requirements and the design of this important aspect of the IB MYP. Parents will receive invaluable information on how to support their students on choosing, participating and reflecting on their own civic engagement. Discussions will include how to help students pace themselves with this IB requirement as well as how to assist students in finding activities that maximize their interest and engagement.
Presented by Lindsay Keller, IB Community Service Coordinator
De-stressing the Freshmen Year Experience:
For nearly all IB MYP freshmen, school at times can be challenging and stressful. This session discusses the many structures in place to support students/parents during those times, as well as provides time-tested tips on how to promote healthy habits at school and at home to minimize stress academically and socially.
Additional documents:
Discovering Your Life's Purpose
Understanding your stress response
How to Tell if You Are a Stress-Prone Personality
Presented by Linda Jensen, IB MYP Guidance Counselor
Working the Problems When the Problems Are Hard:
IB MYP classes engage students well beyond the “knowledge and comprehension” level in each subject area. For many 9th grade students this is a new experience educationally. What does it mean to study for a test and complete assignments that require application, analysis and evaluation of materials in order to demonstrate achievement in a subject area?
Presented by John Krakauer/Jeremy Joiner, IB MYP Math Instructors
What Are the Benefits of a Four-Year IB Experience?
It is true that participating in the IB program at Palmer High School is the most rigorous route through our high school. Is the experience worth the investment? What are some of the many benefits of staying committed to IB throughout the high school years?
Presented by Steve Kern, IB Diploma Years Coordinator
Understanding MYP Philosophy: Carolyn Derr
IB MYP classes explore the same subject content as do other classes in our school. The difference in IB MYP lies not in the “what” is taught, but in the “how” it is delivered. How can understanding the MYP philosophy help parents/students become more engaged in their experiences at Palmer this year and in the years to come?
Presented by Carolyn Derr, IB Middle Years Program Coordinator
