Service Hours - Revised
The NHS Officers and Sponsor are in the process of tweaking the "club" service hours requirements. As a consequence of this revision, members are only required to complete 5 club hours for the Fall, 2009 semester. More information will be available at the December 1 general assembly meeting. 15 total service hours are still required this semester.
Each semester members are expected to contribute 15 hours of their time to community service, including 5 hours of service in one of the following Palmer Organizations: NHS, Peace Jam, Invisible Children, Eco, and Paint the Schools.
NHS - Sponsor is Michael Chamberlin (328-5079). NHS service hours include any volunteer activity sponsored by NHS. Examples include volunteering and/or donating at Palmer's blood drives, and volunteering during Palmer's beautification days.
Peace Jam - Sponsor is Sonia Urban (328-5134). PeaceJam partners youth with Nobel Peace Laureates in completing the Global Call to Action (service projects). We meet Tuesdays at lunch in room 249 and some Saturdays as well.
Invisible Children - Sponsor is Chris Duval (328-5118). Meeting time for Invisible Children is Thursday afternoons on room 04. Website:http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php
E.C.O. Club - Sponsor is Erica Rewey (328-5081). ECO: Earth is a Community of One Meets Thursdays at lunch in room 260 or courtyard. Our focus is on environmental/people issues - "Making an impact by reducing our impact."
Paint the Schools - Sponsor is Erica Rewey (328-5081). Doesn't usually meet, unless we're painting. TBD based on need. Search Facebook for more information.Contributing to society and giving back to the community creates the character that is a NHS member. Extra Volunteer hours one semester does not carry over to the next semester.
Service Hours take many forms: soup kitchens, blood drives, Forest Service trail maintenance, neighborhood beautification, aiding the elderly or disabled, and tutoring are a few possible opportunities. The choice is yours - find something where you can contribute to the good of society by making the world a better place than it was before you volunteered. Here are few volunteer opportunities, but by no means is it conclusive.
Important: use this form to record and verify your hours. Once all of your Fall semester hours are logged, turn in your completed form to Mr. Chamberlin in room 222 sometime during finals week of December 14 (Dec. 14-18).
Do you have a volunteer community service opportunity for NHS students? Please contact Michael Chamberlin or complete the information form.
New D11 district rules now require a completed and updated Volunteer Registration Form for all people who volunteer in a D11 capacity. This includes D11 students. If you volunteer at Palmer (e.g. - Blood Drive), judge at a middle school science fair, or partake in any volunteer opportunity on D11 grounds, you must complete the form. However, if your volunteer services are completely off D11 grounds and separate from D11 sponsored activities, then the form does not need completing. If you are unsure, please complete the form.
You can download and complete the form from the web link above or get a copy from Mrs. Wehling in the principal's office or Mrs. Geschke in the main office. Upon completion, turn in the form to Mrs. Wehling or Mrs. Geschke with ID verification (Driver's License, Student ID).
NHS Blood Drive
The blood drive was an overwhelming success. At last count, Memorial Hospital collected 106 pints of blood. Several donors who couldn't be seen on Friday due to too many people (mostly students) wanting to donate were going to Memorial Hospital to donate blood. In the spring we'll need to offer a two-day blood drive!
