Brian Usher graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1978 majoring in euphonium and jazz guitar. He was the drum major of the marching band and the director of the college pep band. He earned his way through college playing in the rock band, “Night Flight”. While studying with Richard Lawn and Ashley Alexander, he had the opportunity to perform with Clark Terry, Bob Hope, Art Pepper, Bernadette Peters, Jim Nabors, Phil Wilson, Trini Lopez, Barbara McNair, Ed McMann and others.  After graduation, he moved to Colorado Springs and has held positions with the Cheyenne Mountain, Academy, Lewis Palmer, and Colorado Springs school districts. Brian’s summer band program draws students from all around the Pikes Peak region performing as the “Worlds Most Dangerous Summer Band”.  He recently retired the music group “Dreams” with his wife, Phyllis, who is an elementary music teacher in the Academy School District. He also played guitar in the jazz quintet, “JetStream”. He will once again host the Jenkins Jazz Jamboree, a festival that spotlights area jazz bands. Brian was a 1999 recipient of the “Crystal Apple Award” honoring teacher excellence given by the El Paso County Parent Teacher Association. Brian’s bands have performed six times at the Broadmoor Hotel for the Colorado Music Educators Association Clinic/Conference. His bands have performed for the Western Regional Middle Level Consortium, the Colorado Bandmasters Association in Denver and the American School Band Directors Association National Convention 2000 in Snowmass and 2006 in Colorado Springs. Brian has a Master of Education Degree from Lesley University. His favorite pastimes include vacationing in the Caribbean with his wife and family, reading, tennis, golf, playing games with his family, and enjoying his four grandchildren and Charlie Parker, his dog.  Mr. Usher can be reached at 328-5348 or usherbc@d11.org.
