History
of Jazz Education in the Pikes Peak Region
1972 – The Pikes Peak Jazz Festival is
created by Floyd Frame at Harrison High School.
1982 – The festival moves to Doherty High
chaired by Richard Kusk.
1985 – Dick Kusk transfers to Coronado High
and takes the festival with him.
1987 – The Jazz at its Peak Festival is
created by Willie Pirraglia at Irving Middle School.
1990 – Tom Kelly creates the Palmer Jazz
Festival at Palmer High School.
1996 – The Pikes Peak Middle School Honor
Jazz Band is created by Hosea Haynes and Brian Usher.
1998 – Jazz at its Peak Festival moves to
Brian Usher at Horace Mann Middle School.
2000 – The Pikes Peak Middle School Honor
Jazz Band performs at the Colorado Music Educators
Clinic/Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel, the Western Regional
Middle School Consortium and the American School Band Directors
Association National Convention at Snowmass Village.
2000 – The Jenkins Jazz Jamboree premiers
at the newly constructed middle school.
2002 – The Jenkins Jazz Band performs at
the Colorado Music Educators Clinic/conference at the Broadmoor
Hotel.
2006 – The Jenkins Jazz Band performs at
the American School Band Directors Association National
Convention in Colorado Springs.
2007 – The Jenkins Jazz Band performs at
the Broadmoor Hotel for the Colorado Music Educators
Clinic/Conference.
2007 – The Jenkins Middle School Jazz
Ensemble is scheduled to perform at the Midwest Clinic in
Chicago!!!!!!!!!
