This is the 8th year that
Jenkins Middle School has been open in Colorado Springs. Since its
opening the jazz program has been recognized throughout the state as
being consistent in superior performances and sight-reading at
festivals. The Jenkins Jazz Ensemble has performed for the Colorado
Music Educators Clinic/Conference and the American School Band
Directors Association National Convention. Jenkins Middle School
supports music in the schools, offering chorus, swing choir,
orchestra, guitar ensemble and training jazz classes. Each year the
school hosts the Jenkins Jazz Jamboree which features school jazz
groups from southern Colorado, including those jazz band programs
that are just starting. It has been Brian Usher’s goal to mentor
schools that are trying to include a jazz program for the first
time, as well as foster schools that are taking their jazz band
programs to the limits!
