1 semester of Honors Credit will be offered to students who complete the requirements for the identified high level art courses. In order to be eligible, the students must commit to a full year of coursework and be a member in good standing of their high school art department for each semester. This credit may be carried out through multiple years in the same medium, as long as all requirements are fulfilled. Any change in media courses will require that student to first complete all prerequisites prior to taking a level four for honors credit (painting vs. freehand drawing). Students with more than 10 absences per semester (excused or not) may not be eligible for Honors Credit. In addition, students must complete 5 of the following 7 requirements per year:
Below lists the methods of measurement for each item listed, specific to the visual arts. The deadlines for completion of these requirements are listed on the Class Expectations and/or Syllabus handout given at the beginning of the year. A portfolio containing each individual’s documentation will be kept throughout the year.
1. The student’s work must be shown in at least one public (outside of school) art exhibit and must include an artist statement. Such showcases may be focused on high school work, or practicing studio artists at large, and be available for public viewing.
REQUIRED DOCUMENT(s):
· Exhibition program or photographic evidence/layout, artist statement from show, and formal critique of entire hanging
2. The student must attend a portfolio workshop, develop a portfolio, and enter a portfolio review.

· Signed participation form corroborating attendance in workshop, showing of portfolio, and signed participation form from review with formal analysis of critique
3. Students must a keep a sketchbook that shows research, personal growth, and exploration according to rubric guidelines.

· Completed/in-progress sketchbook(s), rubric guidelines, and accumulated instructor feedback forms
4. Students must show a thematic approach to their work, which includes research into art history, and present at least five works out of their portfolio that show an area of focus.

· Journaling, research, critiques, and media experimentation within the sketchbook(s) dealing with a specific theme, physical work concretely proving a thematic approach, and artist statement
5. Students must attend at least one public art show/gallery opening and provide a written evaluation of the event.

· Gallery/Museum brochure or leaflet, viable proof of entry/admission, and student critique of showing
6. Students must have at least 10 works of art, in presentation style, reviewed by a faculty member of the art department. The student must provide a record booklet containing photographic examples of the pieces chosen for review, as well as an artist statement, and selected photocopies from their sketchbook to guide the process of examination. This review, according to an examination rubric, will comprise 25 percent of the student’s final grade.

7. Students must research a given artist or period and give a written or oral presentation. (Parameters of this will be provided by the art teacher)

· Either a formal paper with illustrations given to the instructor, or a lecture provided to an entry level art class with illustrative examples and suggested studio project(s)
I hereby indicate my intention to enroll in a level four visual art class to earn honors credit by fulfilling the stated requirements. If I do not sufficiently adhere to all aspects of the guidelines, I understand that honors credit will be revoked and that I will instead receive a standard credit that reflects my achievement level therein.
