2008 Vote & Be Heard
Annual Student Preference Survey

Each year Colorado Springs School District 11 Food & Nutrition Services participates in a variety of fun and exciting National School Lunch Week (NSLW) activities.

NSLW is a celebration of the benefits of the National School Lunch Program. This year, NSLW was held from October 15th to October 19th. The theme was Vote For School Lunch. Children across the United States were given the opportunity to vote online for their favorite lunch entrees. Five popular entrée choices were transformed into election candidates.

ELEMENTARY

District 11 elementary students had the chance to enjoy tasty meals and cast their vote throughout the first few months of school. During NSLW the nationwide winner was announced. The entrees that were campaigning for votes were:

bullet

Patty Mac 'n' Cheese,

bullet

Gloria Grilled Cheese,

bullet

Biff Burger,

bullet

Larry Lasagna and,

bullet

Pete Pizza.

And the winner is…Pete Pizza!  Here are a few of Pete’s outstanding qualities: low in fat (<15 grams of fat – made with part-skim mozzarella cheese), high in fiber (contains whole grains in the crust) and absolutely delicious!

SECONDARY

Our secondary students had an opportunity to vote for their favorites as well. Although these are not listed on the National Vote for Lunch, the secondary student input is very important to us. We use this information in preparing our menus.

For Breakfast their favorites are:

1 Pancakes
2 Cinnamon Rolls
3 French Toast Sticks
4 Biscuits and Gravy
5 Breakfast Burrito

Their favorites for Lunch are:

1 Soft Taco
2 Pancake Bar
3 Country Fried Steak
4 Super Nacho Bar
5 Burrito

Vote For School Lunch was a great way to get kids involved in the voting process. It also demonstrated that school lunches can be kids’ favorite dishes and be nutritionally prepared at the same time!
