CSSD11 Food & Nutrition Services procedure for Accommodating Children with Special Dietary Needs

Here are some facts from the Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network:

Scientists report an increase in food allergies during the past decade. In particular, peanut allergy among young children doubled between 1997 and 2002.

bullet

Food allergy is the leading cause of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction) outside the hospital setting

bullet

Eight foods account for 90 percent of all reactions in the U.S. : milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews, pistachios, pecans, etc.), wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.

bullet

Food allergies result in 30,000 emergency room visits annually and 150 to 200 deaths.

bullet

12 million Americans have food allergies.

bullet

There is no cure for a food allergy; only strict food avoidance can prevent a reaction.

bullet

One in every 17 children under the age of 3 has a food allergy.
