"Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone, and greater strength for our nation."
~ John F. Kennedy

"Disability is natural. We must stop believing that disabilities keep a person from doing something. Because that's not true . Having a disability doesn't stop me from doing anything."

What We Believe

Mission:  We, the stakeholders of Colorado Springs School District 11, will work in partnership to provide high quality instruction for all students and help each student to reach his or her full potential as part of their lifelong learning.
~ Special Education Advisory Committee

Our Philosophy - We believe that:

  • Instruction and support must focus on the total child

  • Every child’s success is a primary goal.

  • Proactive strategies, interventions and/or research-based programs must be utilized, along with other alternatives as appropriate.

  • We must promote the least-restrictive environment.

  • Every student must be given tools for skills, confidence and self-advocacy.

  • We must celebrate each individual student’s contributions and accomplishments.

  • Our learning environments must support dignity and integrity.

  • Communication and respect are important for all stakeholders.

Task Force Report on Students With Learning Difficulties
The January 26, 2005 Board of Education meeting, featured Dr. Mary Thurman and Dr. Bob Howell presenting a detailed report from a D-11 task force on children with learning difficulties. This report included options and recommendations for how the district will proceed to meet the needs of students with learning deficiencies.

CIMP-Continuous Improvement Monitoring Process

Special Education Advisory Committee

The Department of Special Education in District 11 will implement an advisory committee designed to meet the following requirements:

  1. To provide an efficient and effective way to obtain and share important information about Special Education issues with our customers-parents, staff, students, and agencies.

  2. To provide an efficient and effective avenue in the continuous quality improvement monitoring process with the Colorado Department of Education/Special Education by checking District Improvement.

  3. To provide a vehicle for obtaining advice from District customers in key areas of improvement of student achievement.

The District is seeking representative teachers, classroom aides, administrators, parents, students, and agency personnel to participate in monthly meetings to be held on the second Tuesday of each month from 4:30 to 6:30 PM in the School District 11 Board Room, at 1115 North El Paso (corner of El Paso and Uintah Streets) with the exception of March 2005. The March meeting will be held on March 15th. Please note that the members of the committee will be selected from interested applicants based on a cross section of special education representation:

  1. Pre-school through Transition programs (ages 3 to 21)

  2. Disability groups, based on the challenges

  3. Center-based programs and fully included sites

  4. Community representation

  5. District related services: sampling—transportation, facilities, finance, procurement, and so forth.

In order to maintain fairness in representation of individuals, all positions will be based on VOLUNTEER membership—no one is paid for participation. At this time the Department is seeking volunteers who will make at least a one-year commitment to the committee, have an ability to attend 85 percent of the meetings, and have an eagerness to work to improve achievement of Special Education students in a collaborative setting. If interested, you may refer your self to the committee or provide this newsletter to someone else you believe would make a great contribution.    Volunteer Form
