Grade 2: September Unit
Patterns, Place, and Problems
(@ 20 days)

Overview

Video Introduction. (Adding One and Two-Digit Numbers) September focuses on learning
critical mathematics skills and includes lessons that focus on number sense, computation, time, and patterns. Second graders will experience math number activities using numbers up to and beyond 100, number patterns, place value, adding/subtracting coin and 2-digit number combinations including story problems, even/odd numbers to 50, and time to the hour and half hour.

September also focuses on counting review, even/odd number review, numbers and facts that are greater than/less than/and equal to each other, number patterns with missing numbers, time to the hour and half hour, and using number models and manipulatives to solve word problems to 10. Students will learn different names for the same number and practice addition and subtraction facts to 20. Students will also be able to identify and sort geometric shapes by various characteristics and recognize basic geometry terms.

Assessment Blueprints - As District 11 Diamond Units/Lessons are designed and linked to the Math Web, we will add the Assessment Blueprints that teachers created. Teachers creating Diamond Units and Lessons design those based on the concepts found in Understanding by Design. It promotes the development of a comprehensive assessment plan before any of the activities are designed. This guarantees that learning activities are appropriately aligned to standards, and provide varied opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery.
Before presenting the lessons, we encourage you to review the following Assessment Blueprint for the September unit.

Enduring Understandings are important ideas that students should carry with them years beyond the instruction received this year.

  • Number fluency leads to facility with real life mathematics such as money, time, and computation.

Essential Questions are the most important “big picture” questions students should be able to answer after completing learning activities.

  • How can you prove that a number is greater than, less than, or equal to another number? Does your answer work with facts as well?

  • How would you explain even and odd numbers to your little brother or sister?

  • Can you tell someone else what time you go to bed (or other daily event) in two different ways?

  • How can you tell whether to add or subtract in a word problem that doesn’t come right out and tell you?

CSAP Tested Standards  Highest Frequency High Frequency Other Standards and E-Skills

Highest Frequency = the timing, intensity and level of accountability is extremely high because mastery of these skills will must be demonstrated at this grade level.
High Frequency = the timing, intensity and level of accountability is high because mastery of these skills is expected at this grade level.
Other Standards and E-Skills = the timing, intensity, and level of mastery are not urgent. It should be introduced during this time so students can experience the concept and return in future quarters to strive towards mastery.

Standard 1:  Number Sense - September
Read, write and order numbers up to 200
Identify odd/even numbers to 20
Know different names for the same number (5+5=10 and 2+8=10)
Understand greater than, less than, equal to
Add coins to $1.00 (practice counting combinations of coins: pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters)
Understand and use ordinal numbers (first to twentieth)
Use the terms of estimation correctly (about, near, closer to, a little less than)
Understand greater than, less than, equal to (use basic addition and subtraction facts)
Standard 2:  Algebra and Patterns - September
Identify, describe, create, and extend number patterns (fill in the missing numbers in a pattern).
Identify, describe, create, and extend patterns in shapes
Standard 4:  Geometry - September
Label shapes appropriately by name
Standard 5:  Measurement - September
Tell time to the hour
Tell time to the half hour
Identify the correct tools to measure length, weight, temperature, time
Standard 6:  Computation - September
Know addition and subtraction facts to and from 20 (review/practice math facts to 10/doubles)
Use number models and manipulatives to solve problems (story problems with addition/subtraction to 20)

Parents

You can support your second grader’s math understanding by doing simple activities together. Pointing out the time of regular home events, telling addition/subtraction stories to 10, comparing numbers greater than, less than, and equal to, and looking at number patterns with a missing number can give your child confidence in math class at school.
