Grade 2: May Unit
Symmetry, Shapes, and Measures
(@ 15 days)
Overview
View the
video introduction. (Numeric Patterns) In May of second grade mathematics, students will review
the following critical skills in mathematics; communication, computation in
the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and
division), place value, odd and even numbers, data/predictions/probability,
coordinate planes, perimeter and area, and a variety of problem solving
strategies. Second graders will prepare for third grade mathematics by
solidifying their understanding of the following concepts; recognizing
symmetry, knowing the characteristics of 2 and 3-dimensional shapes, knowing
place value to 100,000, finding patterns in pictures, functions, and in/out
boxes, and reading and using a ruler.

Enduring Understandings
are important ideas that students should carry with them years beyond the
instruction received this year.
-
Mathematics is
dependent on place value.
-
Numbers can be
represented and communicated in many different forms.
-
A sense of number is
necessary to solve problems and communicate the reasoning used to predict
outcomes.
-
Graphics are
tools used to clarify data.
-
Interpreting
data displays helps us make sense of information.
-
Geometry builds
our world.
-
Appropriate
tools and units are needed to measure.
-
Computation and
fluency in basic mathematical operations are vital skills.
-
Estimation and
computation are vital tools.
Essential Questions
are most important “big picture” questions students should be able to answer
after completing learning activities.
-
How does a digit's place in a larger number effect
its value?
-
How can math words help us communicate the solutions
to problems?
-
How do patterns help us make sense of our world?
-
In what ways do graphic representations help us
understand information?
-
How do predictions and estimations help us determine if
our answers are reasonable?
-
Why do we need to be fluent at computation?
-
How does geometry build our world?

Other
Standards and E-Skills = the timing, intensity, and level of mastery are
not urgent. It should be introduced during this time so students can
experience the concept and return in future quarters to strive
towards mastery. |

Parents
Help your second grader explore how to explain the answers to
math problems. Let your child show you the difference between adding and
subtracting. Play with odd and even numbers in the 100's. Ask him/her
to make predictions and solve problems using data from daily events to
predict outcomes. Use the vocabulary of prediction and probability (fair,
unfair, likely, more likely, less likely) in playing games with spinners or
dice. Use the map in the phone book to locate your street. Help your child
find the perimeter and area of a shape around the house. Allow your child
practice adding and subtracting money. The cost of these simple activities
is nothing. The gain in fun, relationship, and mathematics is great!
