Doherty Art Students Bring Home Awards including “Best of Show!”

  The 46th Young People’s Art Exhibition is an art competition for high school art students in the Pikes Peak region. Each high school art teacher can enter only 6 pieces Hundreds of “the best of the best” enter 17 different categories from ceramics, jewelry, painting, drawing, computer art to photography and mixed media to name a few. First through third place in each category are awarded along with honorable mention and judge’s choice.  Only one piece is chosen to be the best of show. The best of show and the first place winners from this years show will be the art work for the poster to advertise next years show. Doherty art teacher Cindy Morse designed and did the graphic work for the poster each year and has for last 8 years. In the 7 years Cindy has been at Doherty, our art students have always shown well and we have had many winners. This year along with other winners we have the Best of Show!

ABE Distinguished Arts Teacher Is From Doherty

Congratulations to David Williams, band director at Doherty High School, for winning this year’s Arts Business Education (ABE) Consortium Distinguished Arts Teacher Award. He was honored at the 29th Annual ABE Luncheon at the Antler’s Hotel on April 16.

"David Williams devotes his seemingly boundless energy not only to directing Doherty’s marching band, but to developing his students’ commitment to excellence and their understanding of all the ‘non-musical’ qualities – from physical self-discipline and self-care to giving back to the community – required to achieve excellence." David devotes most of each summer to introductory and preparatory music camps.

Best and Brightest 2008

Each year The Gazette chooses 25 high school seniors from the Pikes Peak region as its Best and Brightest Class. This year, the 25 were selected from 118 applications. The District 11 students listed below were recognized for their academic achievements and contributions to the community and their schools. Doherty's recipient is Arielle Chambers – valedictorian, violinist, pianist, peer tutor, 2007 Mines Medal of Achievement in Math and Sciences from Colorado School of Mines, Latin Club, church organist, Pikes Peak Summer Reading Library Program volunteer, and National Honor Society.

Doherty Mathletes at the Colorado Math Olympiad

Doherty High School math teacher Terese Dills congratulates Minh Ly for fourth place and Joshua Reding and Brian Nakayama for their honorable mention recognition at the Colorado Mathematical Olympiad. Therese is proud of the Doherty Mathletes, who have worked diligently all year long to represent Doherty in competition.

Business Students win Awards at FLBA Conference

Janet Juarros, Business teacher at Doherty, is proud to announce the following students received awards at FBLA state competition Tuesday in Vail: Lucas Schmidt -- Desktop Applications Programming,  Josie Klein -- Public Speaking 2, Leah Smith -- Personal Finance, and Brian Nakayama -- Economics (2nd place). Brian’s win allows him to compete at the National FBLA Conference in Atlanta, GA, in June. 

Art Students Recognition

Journalism Students Win at Competition

Darcy Hall, Doherty's journalism teacher, wishes to congratulate the following students for winning top honors at the national convention last weekend in Anaheim Tresa Cory won superior for Yearbook Copy Writing: Clubs, Jenna Lewis won superior for Yearbook Copy Writing: Sports, Austin Montoya won excellent for Newspaper Layout, and Bobby Perry won honorable mention for Copy Editing/Headlines/Captions. Superior is the highest award given and only about seven students in the country won that honor in each of those categories.

 

Doherty Takes Third at Mock Trial Competition

For the 13th consecutive year, Doherty's Mock Trial team qualified for state championships. Doherty’s third place in Fort Collins on March 15 was its best finish since winning the state championship in 2000-2001.

Seniors Katie Adkison, Hillary Gardner and Jenny Rackl capped their participation in Mock Trial with their fourth consecutive appearance at state, and junior Kristyn Brisnehan was selected one of the Top Ten Student Attorneys in the tournament.

The Doherty teams thanks attorney coaches Ms. Stephanie Rikeman from the El Paso County District Attorney's office and Mr. David Foley, a local criminal defense attorney. They volunteered over a hundred hours of their time, helping the students fashion their own opening statements, direct and cross examinations and closing arguments. Thanks to their guidance, Doherty received the highest number of professionalism points awarded to any team in the competition.

Doherty Students Sweep NAWIC Competition

Three Doherty students finished in the top three of a local architectural design contest.  After winning the competition, Megan Evans plan set was sent forward to the regional contest.  Megan was informed at the beginning of the week she has also WON this contest as well.  The regional contest is made up of 20-30 local National Association of Women in Construction Chapters located in the states of Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.  Her plan set has been sent to the national contest where they will be judged along with 15 other regional winners.  Congratulations Megan Evans!

 

Doherty Congratulates Keys to Success Winner

Congratulations to Kayla Jahner, junior at Doherty High School, for winning a laptop computer in the Front Range Honda "Keys to Success" competition for juniors and seniors. Kayla had all A’s and B’s on her report card first semester.

School District 11, along with other school districts in the area, is participating in this program by Front Range Honda that gives juniors and seniors who earn all A’s and B’s each semester a chance to win a laptop or a new Honda vehicle by mailing in their report cards to be entered in a drawing.

Music Dept. News!

Katie Bainer, Doherty's Vocal Music instructor, announced that the Doherty choir members of Odyssey, Eclectic, and Women’s Ensemble earned straight 1’s (highest rating possible) at Large Group Festival yesterday!!  In addition, Odyssey received a 1A rating, which actually means that they are at the top of the Superior Rated Schools.

Congratulations to the Doherty Percussion Ensemble for their 2nd place finish at the RMPA State Championships April 10th.  These students worked hard, finished their season strong, and represented Doherty with pride. 

Congratulations to  Band Director David Williams for winning the Arts Business Education Consortium Distinguished Arts Teacher Award. He will be honored at the 29th Annual Luncheon at the Antler’s Hotel on April 16th.

Congratulations to Auto Instructor, Brad Wheaton, for winning the District 11 Crystal Apple Award. Brad is the fourth Doherty teacher in a row to win this "best of the best" teaching award.
