2) The maximum weight of a loaded backpack should not exceed 15% of your
body weight: pack only what’s needed
3) Face your pack and bend at the knees to lift
4) Use both shoulder straps.
Carrying on one shoulder may provoke serious spine misalignments
5) Have a waist strap? Use it! ~compliments of

PTA Legislative Update
Voters, did you know there will be14 Amendments, 1 Referendum, and 4 Municipal and County Issues up for vote on the Colorado Springs ballot this election, in addition to voting for State and US candidates? It is rumored to be the largest ballot in the nation. Legally, voters have 15 minutes to vote in the voting booths, even though it may not always be enforced. So, if voters are not prepared, there could be long lines at the voting booths. If you opt to vote on the November 4 General Election day and not by mail-in ballot, you may want to take time to study the issues before entering the voting booth.
There are two items on the Colorado Springs ballot affecting education:
Amendment 59 –the Savings Account for Education: The Colorado PTA Board of Directors endorses Amendment 59, the Saving Account for Education ballot issue. Briefly, Amendment 59 dedicates a permanent source of revenue to the State Education Fund, creates a long-term Savings Account for Education, and sunsets the requirement to increase annual spending (Amendment 23). Other provisions of Amendment 23 remain – the portion of state income tax going into the State Education Fund will continue. Visit
www.coloradosafe.org for details on the amendment.
Measure 3E – the Mil Levy Override: On August 27, the D11 Board of Education voted to place a mill levy override question on
the ballot. The estimated $21M revenue will be used to: expand the career and technical education course offerings in high school;
raise salaries to recruit and retain quality teachers and school support staff; purchase updated textbooks and other equipment for
classroom instruction; provide teachers and materials for gifted and talented students; expand tutoring and assistance for students not
performing at grade level; provide teachers and materials for students who need help learning English; and expand music and art
instruction in the schools.
For information about the plans and programs that the District would like to implement, call 520-2005, or Board contact information
is available at www.d11.org/boe
Voting dates and deadlines for the upcoming election: Monday, Oct. 20 – early voting begins at designated locations; Tuesday, Oct. 28 – last day to apply for a mail in ballot if mailed; Friday, Oct. 31 – last day to apply for mail in ballot if not mailed; Friday,Oct 31 – last day for early voting at designated polling locations; Tuesday, Nov. 4 – General Election: polls open at 7:00
